“What can I do to improve my communication in English?”
Gary: That’s an excellent question!
The first thing to do is to learn how to control the flow of a conversation.
Eliz: What does that mean?
Gary: For one thing, it means to get other people to speak more slowly.
For example, you can say, “Could you speak more slowly, please?”
Eliz: That’s good advice!
Gary: And if you don’t understand something, you can say, “I’m sorry, but I don’t understand.”
Or “Could you please say it again?”
Eliz: I see.
Gary: If you don’t understand a word, you can ask for help by saying, “What does that mean?”
In business, it’s important to understand and confirm information and ideas.
The worst thing to do is to pretend to understand, when you really don’t understand.
Eliz: So you should ask a lot of clarification questions.
Gary: Yes.
